The Realization of an Entirely Digital Office Space: The Upsides and the Downsides

Now a days, an entirely digital office space is much more than just converting to a paperless office and taking care of all daily tasks and saving important files on computers and servers. It is now a complete office space that exists in a non-physical form! There is no office, no desks, no chairs, and no conference rooms. But, it is also more than a “work from home” setting too: employees are expected to be entirely active all day from wherever they choose to work, which very well may be at home. They are still expected to go to meetings via tele-presence or video presence and converse effectively via messaging, email, and phone.

It sounds pretty awesome to be able to work from anywhere in the world and still be part of a company that is thriving and working towards their goals just like any other business. But, there are also a ton of other reasons that businesses may opt to be entirely digital: first off, it nixes the need to have a physical space for the office, which in turn saves money on rent, utilities, desks, etc. In addition, it allows flexibility for employees to work when they want and where they want; this is beneficial for the company because they get multiple time zones covered and immediacy when it comes to calling a meeting or conversation because it can be on the phone or via video chat!

Now, there are concerns of what happens if a physical meeting or conference is needed? Well, lucky for us, in this day and age it is incredibly simple to rent out a conference room or meeting space to use for a day or two.

However, there are some concerns and downsides that come with implementing this digital office space. One of the most important aspects of a business to client relationship is trust; clients are typically more trusting towards companies that have a physical space that they do business in. A physical office space boosts legitimacy and trust. Another downside is where company culture comes into play. Colleagues may speak to one another and work well together, however, a unique company culture will not form due to the employees being spread out and only conversing with one another when absolutely necessary.

It is clear that a digital office space is not for every company, but we cannot doubt that there are tons of upsides to the practice as well. Here at Velocity Tech Solutions, we love our company culture and our in house warehouse would make it difficult to go completely off site so it is not the best option for us! But, we do realize that for some businesses it is an awesome and practical way to work!

The Velociraptor award is earned, on a monthly basis, by an employee through nominations put forth by their colleagues. These nominations are based on our companies core values and the premise of the award is to catch our co-workers doing things that exemplify our values. Our values include: giving our customers the “wow” experience, doing the right thing, showing passion for our work, being tenacious in our endeavors, and upholding our diverse culture.

This award is an incredible opportunity for our employees to give each other credit where credit is due and make sure they know that when they go the extra mile they will be recognized for their hard work. Not only do they get the honor of receiving the award, but they also get their name on our plaque and receive a free meal!

Having this award is beneficial for our company’s culture as well as our customers. Our customers know that we strive to “WOW” them and we have fun helping them achieve ginormous success. There is nothing better than working with those that love their jobs and love helping their customers.

Now, for the part everyone who is reading has been waiting for, our first ever winner of the Velocity Tech Solutions’ Velociraptor award is, drum roll please, Mona! Our very own shipping manager. She won the award because of her passion and tenacity when working diligently in June to fulfill an order. We were unsure whether or not we had a part in stock for an overnight shipment, so she took on the task and combed through our entire 25,000 square foot warehouse. Lo and behold, she was able to find the product and test it to make sure it would work and we were able to ship it out that day.
